Wander the Waves

It's the height of the summer season and everyone heads south to the Mediterranean to sweat in the searing temperatures, fight for that last spot in the harbor long before dinner time, share an "idyllic" anchorage with a crowd of other boats making it a midnight nightmare when the wind suddenly changes, and motor their way through the procession of other holiday makers. Why? Because EVERYONE does so. Well ALMOST everyone. Interestingly, there are no Swedish flags under the port spreaders. How come one of the greatest sea-faring nations is missing? Because the Swedes know better - they have the greatest cruising secret in the world. No less than 200,000 islands of their own.

Say Sweden, and many will imagine long cold nights and floating ice. Well, the summer is just about the opposite. The almost perpetual sunshine makes it all too easy to enjoy that sun-downer long into the morning, while the sunset slowly makes its way from the west to the east turning into a bright sunrise to usher in the new day. The summer temperatures are typically in the mid 20's, with water to match just slightly below the twenty mark. The sheer number of wild islands means that a secluded anchorage is never too far away, and racing in-between the islands in a summer breeze with no waves makes for an exhilirating ride (and some challenging navigation!)

Most of the islands are uninhabited, but here and there a picturesque and colorful Scandinavian village emerges from the rocks, each with its own harbor. There is one more thing: Swedish mooring. It's quite an adrenaline rush business. You pick one of the countless islets with a sufficiently steep, but accessible rock face, drop stern anchor and aim your bow for the rock until you almost hit it. Stop the boat with the stern anchor, the bow crew steps onto the rock and drives a piton into a crevice. All the effort is, however, rewarded with an incredibly romantic anchoring and one-step land access. If you chose the anchorage well, you are also in for a very calm night, even in strong winds.

The Swedes themselves are a very friendly bunch. There is an intriguing atmosphere of freedom and responsibility, and everyone you meet on water abides by a very simple rule that they learn since youth - "Sailors help each other."

Sweden is - quite frankly - our favorite cruising ground. Are you sold already? Because we could go on.

2 Week Adventure Sail

Our two week adventure sail will take us through the best that Sweden‘s (and Finland's) dramatic Baltic coast offers. With enormous possibilities of this prime cruising area, we will tailor our itinerary to the weather conditions and your mood, but take this as a rough outline:

Sailing out of Stockholm, the Venice of the North, we will explore the countless islands the Archipelago has to offer, weaving our way south to the less frequented waters and islands of the Eastern Archipelago. After visiting the old town of Trosa, with it's typical wooden houses, we will cut our way back north through the outer and wilder Eastern group of Stockholm's Archipelago, before crossing the open Baltic to Finland's autonomous Aaland Archipelago, and it's capital Mariehamn. 

Each of these island groups is an enormous cruising ground on its own and we will spend time exploring their secrets.

Due to the remote nature of some of the areas and the experience of pristine anchorages, the port fees are not included. Budget for about €10 pp per occasional overnight stay. Everything else aboard included.

Expect to sail up to 500nM, including some openwater crossings, and anchor in places that will remain fondly etched in your memory.
